Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya was the founder of Banaras Hindu University; he was the great activist of Indian independence and prominent lawyer too. The great soul considered the primary education is the only source for national stirring. Banaras is the historical place where 21st conference of national congress held in December 1905. In the same year first time Madan Mohan Malaviya expressed his intention to establish a central university in Banaras today known as Varanasi. His regular vision for university development was supported by other Indian nationalist and the final plan revealed in 1911. The main focus was to reduce the poverty line in India that was due to the decline income of Indians as compared to Europeans. They major point was to focus on the advancement of science and technology in India besides the studies of Indian culture and religion. Malaviya evaluated their plan and wish to operate without any governing body interference and first time English language decided as the medium of education and gradually other Indian languages added. The distinct feature of Malaviya vision was to establish residential university other university was running that time were only authorized to conduct the examination and passing degree awarded to the students.

Banaras Hindu University

In the same era Maharani Annie Besant was also putting efforts to enlarge her central Hindu school that established in 1898 in Kamachha surrounding Varanasi. Vedantas vision was to develop a Hindu Philosophical institute Madan Mohan Malaviya had supported her in 1903. A sum of great amount was provided for the hostel construction without any government help. In April Malaviya met Besant and finally they agreed to combine their force and Banaras Hindu University was the output was of two great powers. Malaviya left his legal court practice to target completely on the development of university; 22nd November 1911 is the date when he registered the Hindu university society to congregate the national support to raise fund for building university. After his 4 year struggle Kashi Naresh Narayan Singh and sir Rameshwar Singh gave their support. Krishna Raja Wadiyar was the first chancellor of BHU who performed at the opening ceremony of BENCO workshop on 17th Jan 1919 during his first university visit. University has their anthem known as Kulgeet that was composed by the Dr. Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar.

BHU located on the southern region of Varanasi near the river Shore of Ganga River and the university spread over 1350 acres. The university layout is semicircle having intersecting roads along the radii and in arcs. The campus has 60 hostels that provide fruitful residential accommodation to more than 12000 students. The Sayajirao Gaekwad university library have over 1.3 volumes recorded in 2011. There are three institutional library in which 8 faculty library with over 25 departmental libraries which is every time available for the students and staff. BHU is the top ranked university among the all Indian central universities.
