Mathura, a holy city in the state of Uttar Pradesh comes with immense spiritual sanctity among the pilgrimage circuit of the country. According to mythology this holy city set along the banks of River Yamuna had been that auspicious city where Lord Krishna, the avatar of Lord Vishnu took birth into this earthly world in the Dvapara Yuga. From the historical city of Agra, it takes just an hour to reach Mathura and generally Pilgrims visiting Mathura make sure to visit Vrindavan too.

In fact, the twin cities of Mathura-Vrindavan, both associated with Lord Krishna, jointly personify the myths and folklores of Krishna along with the age old cultural traditions. The city is home to some beautiful and ancient temples and is counted among the ‘Sapta Puris’; i.e. the ‘seven holy cities of Hinduism’. Mathura not only has magnificent temples but is also famed for its magnificent gardens, music, dance and art through which the divine aura of Krishna love is recreated again and again. Some of the major temples of Mathura are Krishna Janmabhoomi temple, Banke Bihari temple, Rangaji temple, Govind dev temple, ISKON Temple. The daily life at Mathura is imbued with the divine presence of Lord Krishna till date and it is said that even today the various lanes of Mathura resounds to the magical flute of the lord.

The city is flooded with pilgrims especially during the festive times when Mathura gets decked up in the most gorgeous way. Holi and Janmashtami are the two main festivals celebrated most pompously at Mathura. The history of Mathura is believed to date back to the times of the epics. Epic Ramayana makes a mention of the city of Mathura and as per other historical records, Mathura had been the capital city of King Kanishka’s kingdom around 130AD.
