Gangotri is the second destination in the Char Dham Yatra. It is considered a sacred place, and a pilgrimage to Gangotri is believed to wash away one’s sins, according to devout Hindus. The Gangotri Temple is situated at an elevation of 3,100 meters in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand. The temple, which is said to have been built by Gorkha General Amar Singh Thapa in the 18th century, is located on the banks of the Bhagirathi River.
The temple remains accessible only from April to October, as the region is snowbound during the winter months, and the roads are closed. Therefore, specific opening and closing dates are assigned each year, allowing pilgrims to visit the temple to pray and offer their devotion to Ganga Mata.

Closing Date 2025 | October 2025 (tentative) |
Opening Date
The opening date is determined by the Pandits according to the Hindu lunar calendar. Almost invariably, the Gangotri temple opens on the auspicious day of Akshaya Tritiya, which falls in the last week of April or the first week of May. In 2025, the opening date of the temple has been announced as 30 April, which coincides with Akshaya Tritiya. The temple opens after a religious ceremony and Pooja are conducted both inside the temple and on the banks of the Bhagirathi River. For the most meaningful experience, it is advisable to be present when the temple opens for the pilgrimage season.
Closing Date of Gangotri
Unlike the other temples in the Chota Char Dham circuit, the temple at Gangotri does not close after Diwali. Instead, the priests decide to close the temple on Vijayadashami (Dussehra), after conducting Pooja and other ceremonies. The idol of Ganga Mata is then taken in a procession to the small village of Mukhba, which serves as her winter residence.
