Located on the bank of Jhelum River, Srinagar offers vibrancy and serenity at the same time. In Jammu & Kashmir, you generally won’t find any major places to party or for the sparkling night out experiences but Srinagar, being the capital city offers it all.

Amarnath

Located 150 km from Srinagar, Amarnath is predominantly known for the Amarnath Cave. It is one of most high-revered pilgrim spots of Hindus. Millions of devotees flock annually to seek the blessing of almighty. Lord Shiva is the presiding deity here. There is a naturally formed ice Shivling which never melts down. Generally, the entire cave is draped with the snow. In summers, the ice, in and around the cave, melts but the Shivalinga remains intact.

The cave is believed to be 5000 years old and holds a very significant place in Hindu mythology. According to the legends, it is the place where Lord Shiva revealed the secret of immortality and life-cycle to his consort Goddess Parvati. The cave is located at the altitude of 3888 m and the path is also not very convenient, still, people flock in herds. Generally, the gate to Amarnath opens only in summers, so when you plan your trip, consider about the season. Amarnath is one of the top religious places to visit in Jammu and Kashmir.

Kokernag

Kokernag is in the Anantpur district and is a famous for the natural springs that are there. These springs are known to have curative qualities. The name Koker Nag is derived from the distinct topography of the area. `Koker` in the local language means fowl and the springs resemble the claws of a fowl. There is a rose garden, a botanical garden as well as a spring called the Papashudan Nag.

A very beautiful flower specked valley with the towering Himalayas acting as the background is just 4 km away from Gulmarg bus stop. Khilanmarg is known as one of the well known tourist hubs of the city of Gulmarg. This is a visual treat for the eyes, especially during the spring season, as the entire valley is at that point in time covered with vibrant flowers.

Khilanmarg is well known as the place for the winter ski runs, and one can get the best views of the Himalayan ranges from this point. There is no entry fee for visiting the place and can be visited on all days of the week from 7:00 AM – 5:00 PM.

Lienmarg is essentially a beautiful wildflower meadow and one can enjoy the glory of Mother Nature here. This is located at a distance of 10 km from the town of Gulmarg and at an altitude of 8700 feet above sea level. The place is quite popular for its picturesque beauty. This meadow is quite attractive and is full of blooming wildflowers and is surrounded by grooves of pine forests.

Many tourists especially the trekkers and the campers, come to visit Lien Marg. This is also known to be the perfect spot for holding winter sports related activities. Lienmarg has recently become quite popular especially for the honeymooners. For reaching Lien Marg one is required to cross the Ningle Nallah and one even crosses a pine forest and then a sequence of beautiful glades follows. You can also hire a pony and ride to the place, if you’re not interested in walking down. There is no entry fees for visiting the place and the entire place can be seen in duration of 3 to 4 hours.

Dal Lake

The most distinctive landmark of Srinagar is divided by causeways into four parts, the Nagin Lake being one of them. It is not a lifeless water body. The lake is home of communities who have made their homes arraying from fishermen to houseboat owners. There are fields of lotus blossoms in parts of the lake, vegetable patches, shops and even villages. The best way to explore the lake is by Shikara boat. You travel will be incomplete if you are staying in Srinagar and not staying in Houseboat. The houseboats have all imaginable luxury in a unique and endearing way.

Situated amidst the Harmukh hills of Ganderbal district of Jammu and Kashmir, this lake is clean and sacred. It is also known as Gangabal lake and this lake is the major lake in high altitude lakes and is considered to be the original source of Ganga and hence The place is also considered as the Haridwar of Kashmir and due to this the Gangbal trek is kept in the holy category.

Famous Garden

Overlooking the panorama of Dal Lake, Mughal Gardens adorned with terraced lawns, cascading fountains and bright flowerbeds. The beautiful gardens was bestowed by Mughal Emperor Jahangir for his wife Nur Jehan. Other than that there are also gardens, which are included in Mughal gardens. Nishat Bagh (11km) was designed in 1633 AD by Asaf Khan, brother of Nur Jehan. Chasmashahi, the royal spring of refreshing sweet water cherished by the Mughals, is surrounded by a Mughal Garden laid out by Shah Jahan in 1632 AD. On a nearby spur of the mountain is the ancient monument of Pari Mahal, planned out by Dara Shikoh as a Sufi School, surrounded by a beautiful garden.

Mughal Gardens

One of the famous places to visit in Kashmir, the Mughal garden is a splendid example of Mughal architecture, the Mughal garden also consists of three other gardens, including Chashma Shahi, Nishat Bagh and Shalimar Bagh.

  • Nishat Bagh, known as the Garden of Bliss, is situated on the banks of Dal Lake and is a part of the Mughal Gardens.
  • In this garden built by the Chashma Shahi Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, you get to see fascinating views of the mountains, which is also situated near Dal Lake.

Indira Gandhi Tulip Garden

This beautiful tulip garden consists of wide variety of tulips with superb colors. And since tulips grow only in spring, garden is only open between the months of March to May. This place is best for photography.

Shalimar Bagh

The Shalimar Bagh is a beautiful Mughal Garden that is linked through a channel to the Dal Lake. It was built by the Mughal emperor Jehangir for his wife Nur Jahan and is a great and outstanding example of Mughal design. The garden is based on a design that is referred to as the Persian Garden layout. The symmetry in the design is remarkable and it is also linked to the Dal Lake with canals. There are three terraces to the garden which is a unique aspect of the garden.

Pari Mahal

This palace, situated on the stairs of Zabarwan Mountain, is known as Pari Begum’s palace. Pari Begum’s proper name was Nadira Begum, Dara Shikoh Begum, son of Shah Jahan, Dara Shikoh built this palace in 1650 for her Begum and you will see the beautiful architecture in it.

Vaishno Devi Temple in Jammu

One of the most popular spiritual tourist destinations of the country, Vaishno Devi Temple is always thronged by the devotees. The divine shrine is located at the elevation of 5200 above the sea level in the spiritual city Jammu. Perched in the rocky terrain of Trikuta Mountain, Vaishno Devi Temple is held in high reverence in Hindus because it is one of the 108 sacred Shakti Peethas according to Hindu legends. Vaishno Mata is believed to be the manifestation of almighty Goddess Durga. This is another reason that people flock in huge numbers to offer their prayers.

In order to reach the divine cave where the shrine is located, you have to trek around 13 km uphill through the steep slopes. So, visit this holy temple and seek the blessing of Goddess Durga Mata. Apart from the Vaishno Devi temple, Raghunath temple, Ranbireshwar temple, Mahamaya temple, and Peer Baba are other places of interest in Jammu. No wonder why the city is tagged as ‘The city of temples’.
